Why doesn't a newly-published website appear on search engines like Google?

The sites I design are optimised for search engine visibility, but because of the way search engines work, it may still take many months to achieve the search engine rankings you were hoping for.

Search engines can't index all of the Web's content all of the time. It may take several weeks to get to yours for the first time. There is no real way to circumvent this; the best option is to provide good content for when they do arrive. For example, good markup and a sitemap in XML format are included in the sites I design.

Additionally, it seems services like Google try to ensure the integrity of the sites they list by using a sandbox feature. New domains are not indexed immediately, but instead are put on probabation, sometimes being held back for several months. Many believe this to be a means of filtering out spam sites, and other resources using unscupulous SEO techniques.

When the site is first indexed, it may score very low and be buried way down in the search results. This should improve over time as the website becomes more prominent and is referenced elsewhere on the Web.
